My friend Sue has written a great post
here about the use of sketchbooks and thrown down the challenge to other people to explain how they use them. Well, in my case, I rarely use them as a vehicle to try out ideas that are going to be translated further. If I am following a course then I will produce a sketchbook with direct drawing or painting in that relates to the course, but mostly I use them for doodling ideas into or collaging old prints or photocopies of things. I love small, portable books that I can use for a 'quick fix' collage from torn up magazine pages. They don't serve any purpose other than making me feel good. They are not great art but they are great fun. When I read the post and then looked at my box of old sketchbooks I picked out a couple of small ones and selected these pictures to show you what I mean.

I can't show you as I don't have a sketch book but just have an idea and go for it! Probably why so much of my stuff doesn't work out as I anticipated!
I love what you have done there though and it stands as art in its own right I think.
I have boxes of sketch books, but they are nearly all full of dawings or doodles or some watercolour. I don't usually use them for developing ideas as I work rather impuslively and usually work things out on scraps of paper which are then discarded - trying to change my ways however! Will try and get a sellection together for a post.
Hi Lesley. I don't really keep a sketch book but you've inspired me to start ! Yours is divine .
Thank you again in all the hard work for the postcard swap. I made my first one today as I am going away so had to get on. I hope it's OK ...I am my own worst critic ! )
I think your sketchbook pages are beautiful. I love using sketchbooks but I'm very sporadic about it! I've started one to jot down ideas for the postcard swap.
Your sketchbooks are wonderful,of course, and I know what you mean about how you use them. I did try and do some exercises in one of mine, thanks to Gina's inspiration on one of her blog posts last year, but I fell by the wayside. I am going to try and use one for the postcard swap, just to keep track of some of my ideas. But it's inevitable that I will mostly make it up as I go along....
Lovely to peep inside your sketchbooks. Another one here who hopes to possibly start a book for "swap".......... just got to stop my head spinning first :O))))))))))))
Your sketchbooks are wonderful Lesley and show just how creatively versatile you are.
Sorry to say I haven't kept a sketchbook since school days ...!
I love Sue's crows, and her sketchbook isn't too shabby either:-)
Enjoy your TV-fest this evening.

Such interesting sketch books. I will show my latest book of fantasy drawings in my next post. I was bought a handmade sketch book for christmas and I have started my drawings in that.
Have a nice weekend!

Oh Lesley your sketch books put me to shame - they are art pieces in themselves. Mine are terrible scribbles and REALLY bad sketches with cryptic notes all over the place. Maybe you have a tidy mind?
Love these sketchbooks. All the sketches look like finished pieces to me and what I love most is how you get a quick fix by doing a collage, that it makes you feel good. Great piece of advise, thanks so much
Hi Lesley, we met at a couple of Sue's courses, a couple of years ago, I was doing iris seed heads on one of the weekends and you were working with beetles I think. How lovely of you to share your sketchbooks. I really like the slightly more abstract architectural pages where you have left space for the imge to breathe, its so much easier to leave space in a sketchbook than something finished isn't it?
Your sketchbooks must be a wonderful creative library of ideas for you.
What wonderful images in your sketchbooks! So graphic, and yes, architectural. I love them all! Would I show mine?? Hmm....maybe... There's nothing noteworthy in them, but I still like looking back through them. Betsy Best Spadaro just did an interesting post about her process of using sketchbooks. :)
